Replace Archive button with Delete button in Mail App - iOS 12

When adding other email accounts in the Mail app in an iPhone or iPad, such as a Gmail account, the Mail app sometimes adds the Archive button as the primary action for discarding messages. Follow these easy steps to change the Archive button to Delete button, so it goes in the trash, not the archive folder.

  1. Tap on Settings.
  2. Tap on Passwords & Accounts.
  3. Tap on the account that has the Archive button, under the Accounts list.
  4. Tap on the Account with the email address.
  5. Tap on Advanced.
  6. Under the section Move Discarded Messages Into, select the Deleted Mailbox.
  7. Make sure you swipe back to the Account page, and tap on Done on the upper right corner, to take effect.
  8. You might need to restart the app or tap on another message to see the Delete button.
