Bullet Journal and Task Management in Obsidian (part 4) - Collections

This is the last part of how I use Obsidian as a bullet journal and task manager.  To download the vault and read from part 1, click here . Collections Grocery List This is still work in progress. The database of my online grocer takes forever to fetch my saved lists, and searching through thousands of products would take me hours as their search is messed up too. So I save the links of my favorite products in the Kanban cards to save time.  Along with the "to buy", "ordered" (ordered but not yet received as sometimes they call at the last minute for items they don't have) and "stocked", I also have categories lists (protein, dairy, fruits and vegetables etc) and "archive/rare" for items we don't buy or need often (like a USB-C cable or an epilator). Goals I keep this page simple but it gets long with subtasks and notes, which is fine for me. If the goal is too big, it has a wikilink to its own note. Adding a date to it shows up in the d

Bullet Journal and Task Management in Obsidian (part 3) - Daily Note

This is part 3 of explaining my use of Obsidian as a bullet journal and task manager. For part 2 (Index and Planner) click here . For part 1 (folder structure and vault download) click here. The Daily Note template Habit Tracking I keep my habit tracking simple, without the need for complex setups with Dataview etc. I start by having a link to the Index page in a collapsible callout (the arrow next to the Index link). Inside the callout are links to notes for insights I have on the subjects (important info I want saved for the future or things I've learned) Then I have some of the habits listed with alternate checkboxes and tags. Every day I just type the data next to them, and they will show up when searched by their tag. For pomodoros, I just add a tomato emoji as I complete them. Then we have the other habits categorized into their own collapsible callouts. Habits I didn't get to do I use the - [-] alternate checkbox so they don't rollover (migrate) to the next day. As

Bullet Journal and Task Management in Obsidian (part 2) - Index page and Planner

Setting a date on these (or from anywhere else in the vault) will automatically show them to the respective daily note (explained later) future log - this one you can also see on the bottom right pane, pinned. This contains monthly logs (months separated as headings) of calendar entries or important tasks that have date and time. I use the alternate checkbox - [<] to change the icon to calendar. I then add the time in the description of the task (tasks are managed by the Tasks plugin). recurring - all my recurring tasks and calendar entries go here. They will

Bullet Journal and Task Management in Obsidian (part 1)- Free Vault for download and Folder Structure

This is the vault in Obsidian that I use daily as a bullet journal and task manager. This is going to be a series of posts on explaining how I use this vault.   Download the full vault .zip file here . Extract it, save the folder to your desired location and then open it from Obsidian. If you just want the snippets, download the snippets .zip file here . Extract and paste the CSS snippets to your .obsidian/snippets folder (show hidden files and folders in your file explorer). For a list of the alternate checkboxes you can use, see here (you don't need the minimal theme, the CSS snippet I have enabled will work on any theme, even the default one):  https://minimal.guide/Block+types/Checklists Folder Structure I have 3 parent folders: inbox - this is where I have Obsidian automatically store any new note I create journal - this is where I have Obsidian automatically store daily notes. Moving all of my content here

At 35 years old and with 2 kids with special needs, I decided to learn how to code and get a degree for it too. I've been in the IT as a computer technician for many years, then when my kids were born I decided to take a REALLY long break to raise them.  As they're growing a little older, I find myself wanting to get back to work, but also try a different direction (and with something I wanted to do since I was a teenager, but didn't have the opportunity to do so at the time): programming. I do NOT possess a high school diploma, so I need to start obtaining that first, but I also currently need to take 2 months of intensive language courses to complete the requirements for obtaining citizenship in the current European country I'm in (if my blog's name didn't give it away, we travel a lot).  With that in mind, I decided to do away with having multiple, single-niche blogs and just have one, multi-niche blog (and no, I don't care what happens to the revenue and

Gamify progress with Notion's new Status property

In my new goal tracking template (with projects and tasks databases, I may release a free public template soon) I've found the new Status property a welcome addition.  What I'm even more delighted about, is having a completion number to check my progress that takes very little setup, through the new Status property.  Let me show you what I mean and how to set it up. In this example, I show 4 tasks completed, out of 11 in total that are in Not Started and In Progress status in my Tasks database In this example, I show in my Projects database how many tasks completed for each project individually. I did the same for Goals and their projects (and I suppose you can even setup a subtasks database and do the same for your tasks if you want to take it that far) Both of these options are very simple to setup: Have a 2-way relation between your Tasks and Projects database and connect your tasks with their project (In my case this was already done) Create a rollup that relates to the Tas

Life wiki, goal tracker, habit tracker, content creation, diary, task manager (free Notion template)

A template that has... well, maybe not everything, but comes pretty close as an all-in-one solution.   Duplicate the template to your workspace from here: https://www.notion.so/tt-templates/life-wiki-template-122ce94b063449b19ebaed81764383fb  Note: click on the images to see the template snapshots in full size. my own life wiki dashboard setup The main dashboard is a life wiki with all the important links and a habit tracker (I prefer Google Sheets to track my habits, but I've added a 2022 + 2023 habit trackers within Notion for those who prefer an all-in-one solution). life wiki page from the template My favorite section is the goal tracker database.  the goal tracker page   inside a goal page with its dedicated task tracking A gallery of goals that are front and center to keep you focused on the big picture, connected to their respective tasks (inline table view inside the goal, use the included "goal template" with every new goal for easy setup), and a task database w

Handwriting in Notion and Joplin

Even though Joplin and Notion don’t natively support hand-written notes, you can still write your notes by hand in both of these apps by enabling Google’s handwriting keyboard on any Android device. This will automatically convert your handwriting to text on your pages. If you own a Samsung device, you can do this with Samsung’s handwriting keyboard as well. I personally prefer Google’s handwriting keyboard, for some reason it feels more fluid and natural. Now why do I prefer this solution instead of using something like Samsung Notes or OneNote, or just pen and paper? I’m a big fan of Ryder Carroll’s bullet journal method and I enjoy filling up my daily spreads in an A5 notebook. But I also like having important information available to me in all of my devices, and on the go. And as someone with ADHD and bad short-term memory, I feel safer having an app to remind me of important tasks and events. I also like handwriting my blog articles, and this makes it easy for me to transfer my

Daily Diary - Free Notion Template

This is a very simple and minimalistic daily journal template without the need for a database, therefore it's faster to load. Duplicate the template to your Notion workspace from here:  https://tt-templates.notion.site/diary-1aa601ae02cb4b4ea84ba8ea4a2bfb8e Adding new entries First we have the Add a new entry template button. This will automatically create a journal entry page with the current date and time of creation included in the title. Upon opening this page, you'll also find 3 boxes for you to write in, one for reflections - free writing, and the other 2 in a separate column to list the day's achievements and things that you're grateful for.  You can of course add more prompts and callout boxes by clicking the ⚙️ button next to the "Add a new journal entry" button to edit the template page. Archive system No database? No problem. Here you have a page for each year and each month to serve as your archives. To create a new set of 12 months archives for n

New Page template button with timestamp in the title - Notion

These days I'm all about discovering ways for people to use Notion  without  the use of databases, as databases slow things down. I'm also an advocate for minimalism while still having an efficient workflow. Today I'm giving a tip with an example of daily journal entries. Usually, a Notion template comes with a database for journal pages, with a "Date created" property which is mighty convenient. But you can also replicate that without a database.  This will make it super fast for you to start journaling on a new page with the current date and time already added to the title. Create a simple text page where all your journal entries will be stored (no databases/tables). Optional: You may create a subpage to serve as an Archive for past entries. Again this should be a simple text page, not a database. You may also have multiple archives, named after the 12 months or years to keep things more organized. Type / , then template , then select the Template button . Give

Easy access to blocks within a Notion page on your phone

Notion's link to block feature meets Google's Action Blocks . Notion's pages tend to look rather long and overwhelming on the phone. Set up shortcuts for any and as many blocks as you'd like, even if they reside on the same page, for easy access. Get the links and create the shortcuts On your desired block, click on the 6 dots, and from the context menu, tap on "Copy link to block". Open Action Blocks, tap on "Create action block" and select "Open a link". Paste the Notion link to block, click Next, select an icon of your choice, name it, "Save action block" and drag the new icon to your homescreen. To open the links from the Notion app Tap and hold Notion icon until it bounces and tap on the tiny "i" icon on its top right corner. Tap on the "Set as default" section, enable "Open supported links". Also on the same section, tap on "Supported Web Addresses" and enable them all. Disclaimer:

Free daily bullet journal template for Notion

Another free template for Notion users. This one is a simple daily and weekly bullet journal, with the option for recurring tasks or daily habits! The template blocks make it easy to create a new day or a new week with repeated tasks, appointments and habits pre-created (once you setup the template block the first time). Watch the video above on how to use the template. Duplicate the template from here. Probably the best (or weird depending how you find it) part: This template doesn't use ANY databases (unless you want to make some for other reasons, like your collections). So it's fast to navigate, and it's simple and easy to use. The old days and weeks can easily be drag and dropped in an archive page, and you can choose to save them or delete the entire archive after a while. The "today" block also comes with a dedicated page for daily journal entries. Since it's inside the specific day block, it will be archived with it when it's done.  On the left side
